A group of protesters from the University of Benin Students Union, activists and some members of the public on Monday stormed the headquarters of the Edo State Police Command demanding justice for Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.
Uwaila, a 100-level student of the Department of Microbiology in UNIBEN, was reportedly gang-raped and killed by unidentified hoodlums inside the Redeemed Christian Church of God, where she went to read at the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin.
Uwa’s death at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital sparked outrage, with #JusticeForUwa dominating social media trends on Sunday.
The protesters, wearing black outfits and carrying placards with different inscriptions, staged a walk from the Kings Square area of Benin City to lice command headquarters at GRA.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ayoola Ajala, who received the protesters, assured them that investigations have commenced and arrests have been made in connection to Uwa’s murder.
Ajala debunked allegations that the police station where the matter was reported refused to look into the incident for lack of funding.
